About the South Bruce Group 97
|
In 1979 interested persons in the Pine River area, ten kilometers south of Kincardine, formed the first Amnesty International group in the district. Kincardine formed a group in 1981 and Lucknow did the same in 1982. The three groups united in 1984 to form South Bruce Group 97 . In 1984 Group 97 adopted a Prisoner of Conscience, Reverend Fekeda Hundessa, a pastor of the Ethiopian Evangelical Mekane Yesus Church in Ethiopia. He had been arrested in 1983 because of his church activities. After years of letter writing on his behalf, Reverend Hundessa was released in 1989. In 1990, the Mayor of Kincardine planted a tree in front of the Kincardine Post Office and a plaque erected to commemorate Reverend Hundessa’s release. Since 1999, our Group has worked on behalf of our adopted “Disappeared Person”, Nacer Eddine Batach. Mr. Batach, an architect working in the Urban Planning Department of Alger’s city council in Algeria, was taken from his office by four policemen February 20, 1994 and has not been heard from since. The South Bruce Group meets at the Kincardine United Church, 721 Princes Street, the third Tuesday of the month except for July, August, and December. In December Group 97, the Students Group and supporters have a float in the annual Kincardine Santa Claus Parade. Group 97 Chairs: Lynda Curnoe 1984 – 1987 Margaret Ferguson 1986 – 1988 Sheila Burr 1989 – 1999 Fred Kirby 2000 - Student Group
